Are You Meeting NFPA Dust Collection Standards?

The image of sparks flying is so compelling that it is often used as an idiom or catchphrase.  To some, it means that tensions have mounted to the point of an altercation.  To others, it may mean relational chemistry: an electrical connection between two people.  In the metalworking business, though, sparks flying means production.  Work is getting done.   But could these sparks also represent danger?  If you don’t have an NFPA dust collection system, sparks can pose a threat to your workers, equipment, and business.  Learn how to get that danger under control with Imperial Systems today.

NFPA Dust Collection Standards

NFPA dust collectionThe NFPA dust collection standards that apply to your metalworking business will vary depending upon the sort of work you do.  Depending upon the type of metal you use—as well as the different processes it goes through and other supporting products involved—there may be different specifications you are required to meet.  Overall, however, NFPA dust collection standards are aimed at ensuring that tiny particulates do not accumulate in the shop or its air in order to prevent the danger of combustion.  Even aside from the added danger of sparks, some materials’ dust can combust spontaneously; if you are working with these, it is even more imperative to research and follow the recommended guidelines for safety.

CMAXX Dust Collector System

One of the best places to start when looking for a dust collection system which is NFPA compliant is the CMAXX dust collector system from Imperial Systems.  This cartridge dust collection system is a high performing option which uses a pulsing filtration system to filter unpleasant, and potentially harmful, dust into the hopper before returning safe and clean air into the shop.

Not only is the CMAXX NFPA compliant and effective, it is also one of the most efficient systems on the market.  With 10% more filter media than other same sized vertical cartridge collectors and 20% more internal area around the filters, its performance can’t be beat.  And with advanced PD technology, you get up to twice the filter life of the industry standard, ensuring that you do not have to continually spend time and money cleaning or replacing inefficient filters.

OSHA Industrial Dust Collector Filters Standards Met by Imperial

Dust Collection systems are an essential piece of a facility’s dust control tactics and industrial dust collector filters are a key element of those systems. As such, industrial companies have to stay up to date with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for dust collection equipment within an industrial workplace.

OSHA industrial dust collector filters standards are held in high order to ensure that dust collector filters are able to keep an industrial plant running smoothly and safely. Recently, standards have been more strictly enforced due to safety hazards. In the last quarter century, there have been hundreds of deaths and injuries due to combustible dust explosions. In the past decade, OSHA has increased its attention to safety within industrial workplaces. Inspectors visit plants to check that OSHA industrial dust collector filters standards are met as well as the standards for the collector system and plant as a whole. The inspections specifically target workplaces that commonly deal with combustible dust, including metalworking plants.osha industrial dust collector filters

In order to have your metalworking company prepared for an inspection, here are some tips to help you know what you can expect from them so that they can see what they expect of you.

OSHA Industrial Dust Collector Filters and Systems Inspection Guidelines:

1.Housekeeping: The first thing an inspector will notice is the housekeeping (or lack there of) within the workplace because this is a sign of the performance of the dust collection equipment. If combustible dust covers the workplace like an open field after a fresh snowfall, then the inspector knows something is not meeting the standards. Keep in mind, dust build up that is anything above 1/32 of an inch is going to be noted by the inspector.

2.Record Keeping: The inspector will want to see that you are organized and have a good understanding of the history and current status of your equipment. Make sure you’re ready to provide inspection records, operating procedures, process safety assessments, and combustibility data of dusts that might be present in your workplace.

3.Game Planning: Inspectors will be pleased if you recognize the importance of safety by having a grasp on the dangers of combustible dust and a plan to avoid them. This includes being familiar with current codes and understanding how your equipment is part of your plan to avoid combustion.

You can trust that your equipment is an effective part of your protections against combustible gas if it is from Imperial Systems. Imperial provides industrial dust collector filters OSHA loves because we design and manufacture filters that meet OSHA industrial Dust Collector Filters standards. The rest of our products, including our dust collection systems also meet OSHA codes so that you will have nothing to worry about when the inspector comes in.

Air Duct Dust Collection Systems for Food Processing

Health and safety is a priority for any company, no matter what industrial processes take place within the facilities. However, the importance of health and safety is elevated within food processing companies because the distribution of contaminated food is bad news. A big part of keeping healthy conditions within a food processing workplace is a trusty air duct dust collection system.

Dust collection should not be an afterthought within your food processing company. It is of utmost importance for you to have a functional and effective dust collection system with durable air duct work. After all, your system is only as good as the air ducts connected to it. If your workplace is due for a new system, here are some guidelines for the process of finding the best one for you.air duct

Finding the Right Air Duct Dust Collection System:

Ask questions. There are a number of questions you will want to be asking yourself about your dust collection situation. For instance, what kind of dust builds up in my workplace? Is it wet, fibrous, rough, or even combustible? Do I want the dust returning to the processing or do I want it discarded? What kind of codes and standards do I need to be meeting with my dust collection system? What exact processes are generating dust?

There are also questions you will want to be asking about your current dust collector and air duct work in order to better gauge what you are looking for in new equipment. For example, what are the areas in which dust is being inadequately collected? Are there any areas in which hazards are potentially imminent? Can I sufficiently fix my current system or is it time to invest in a new one?

Look for signs of a quality system. A quality system will be one that works for your convenience. Thus, you will be looking for efficiency in terms of time, energy, and even space. The newest and most advanced systems are quite compact and designed for optimal functionality. This functionality includes easy access for filter replacement. Filter replacement, by the way, should be much few and far between with the most quality filters. New technology such as nanofiber filter media allows for much longer filter life, which is better for your system and your wallet.

Imperial systems offers advanced, quality dust collection systems that are proven to get the job done. We recommend our CMAXX dust collector for the food processing industry. With the newest technology and highest efficiency ratings, Imperial’s products are sure to fulfill your dust collection needs.

How to Choose Between Imperial Systems and Donaldson Torit Filters

When it comes to selecting the right filters for your dust collector system, you have many options. With so many options like Imperial Systems, Camfil Farr and Donaldson Torit filters available, how do you choose between them all?

Torit FiltersOne of the best ways to determine the quality of dust collector cartridge filters is to look at the efficiency measurements of each filter. There are a number of different measurements of efficiency, so it may be helpful to sift through a few of them to gain a better understanding of exactly what each of them denotes.

Lets take a quick look at a few of the most common efficiency measurements of replacement cartridge filters for dust collection systems that you will want to consider when examining Imperial and Torit filters.

Efficiency Measurements for Imperial Systems and Torit Filters:

  1.   Gravimetric Analysis: This method of efficiency measurement is established by the amount of particles able to be captured by weight of the particles. This measurement is expressed in a percentage. For instance, if a filter has a 99.9% efficiency, that percentage refers to the ability to capture particles that are of a certain weight (perhaps .5 μm and above).
  2.    MERV Scale: MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value and the scale runs from one to sixteen (sixteen being the highest efficiency). This type of efficiency measurement is useful in determining the quality of a dust collection filter, but it is not the most indicative measurement because the scale was originally designed for HVAC filters.
  3.    Mass Density Efficiency: The third form of efficiency measurement is mass density efficiency, which is the weight per unit volume of air. This is perhaps the most significant form of efficiency measurement because it is the measurement that regulation administrations such as OSHA and the EPA use for filters. You will want your filters to meet the standards of these administrations.
  4.    Future Filter Efficiency Measurement: The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is reportedly working on a new and improved scale on which the efficiency of dust collection system filters will be measured. Look for this new form of measurement within the next couple of years.

The efficiency of your air filters are a huge factor for the successful functioning of your dust collection system. Imperial systems offers filters with the highest MERV rating in the industry that meet OSHA and EPA standards. Imperial Systems’ filters also have the longest filter life in the industry, which far surpasses the life of Donaldson Torit filters. If you are currently using a Torit filter, you might want to look into its efficiency and compare it to the products offered by Imperial Systems.
